Hahn/Cock

2013

Katharina Fritsch's 'Hahn / Cock' (2010) is a 4.72-metre-tall ultramarine-blue sculpture of a rooster, cast in fibreglass. Installed on the Fourth Plinth in London's Trafalgar Square from 2013 to 2015 — standing between Nelson's monuments of military might — the absurdly bright blue cockerel made a sly, feminist-inflected statement about monuments, masculinity, and the public nude. The sculpture has since travelled to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Walker Art Center, and other venues, and has become a widely recognised icon of 21st-century public art.
