Marc Chagall
The Dream
1939
Marc Chagall's 'The Dream' ('Le Rêve', c. 1939–1941) is a quintessential example of his poetic Surrealist dream-world. A woman in a white wedding dress lifts off the earth toward her floating lover; below them, the rooftops of Chagall's Russian-Jewish hometown of Vitebsk nestle beneath a slate-blue sky populated by his recurring chickens, violin, and goats. Painted as Chagall prepared to flee Vichy France for New York in 1941, the picture blends erotic longing with Jewish folklore and Russian memory. It is one of the defining Chagall holdings at the Kunsthaus Zürich.
