Dan Flavin
Neon Works
1966
Dan Flavin (1933–1996) pioneered sculpture made exclusively from commercially manufactured fluorescent tubes; over three decades he turned entire rooms into chromatic 'light environments' that became one of the defining achievements of American minimalism. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) holds a permanent display devoted to Flavin, including works from his 'Monument to V. Tatlin' series. Walls, ceilings, and floors are bathed in pink, yellow, and blue neon, letting visitors experience directly the mid-century American move that enlisted manufactured light as the material of art.
