Takashi Murakami's Jellyfish Eyes

The 'Jellyfish Eyes' series, produced by the Japanese Superflat master Takashi Murakami (b. 1962) in the mid-2010s, distils his signature fusion of flat Edo-era picture space and the visual vocabulary of contemporary anime fandom. Canvases are saturated with hundreds of multicoloured cartoon eyeballs floating like a sea of jellyfish, finished with a commercial, silkscreen-like smoothness that deliberately erodes the line between high art and subculture. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA) has staged some of North America's largest Murakami exhibitions, and works from the 'Jellyfish Eyes' series are a highlight of its ongoing engagement with his work.
