After the Rain

1969

'After the Rain' is one of the permanent outdoor sculptures at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, a large bronze reclining figure from Henry Moore's late 1960s series. Installed in 1989 to mark the museum's opening, it continues Moore's career-long meditation on the reclining human form as a landscape of mass and pierced void — earthbound yet monumental. Placed in the city of the 1945 atomic bombing, the sculpture carries an added weight: Moore's lifelong preoccupation with human dignity and resilience after war merges with the distinctive memorial ethos of contemporary Hiroshima.
