Francis Bacon Studio

2001

In 1998–2001 the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin undertook the archaeological relocation of Francis Bacon's entire South Kensington studio — the chaotic room at 7 Reece Mews where the artist worked from 1961 until his death in 1992. Over 7,000 items (paint tubes, photographs, torn magazine pages, drawings, books, fragments of canvas, dried pigment on the floor) were mapped, removed, and painstakingly reassembled behind glass in Dublin, becoming the only complete painter's studio preserved as an exhibit. The installation transformed the Hugh Lane into one of the world's foremost Francis Bacon research centres outside London.
