Katsushika Hokusai Prints
c. 1829-1833
The Honolulu Museum of Art holds one of the richest U.S. collections of Japanese woodblock prints, including hundreds of sheets by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). Highlights include major impressions of 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' and 'Red Fuji' from the 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji', prints from 'One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji', and the 'Hokusai Manga'. Pacific geography and long-standing Japanese-American ties give the museum an unusually deep platform for ongoing Edo-period ukiyo-e scholarship.
