Bathers at Asnières
1884
Georges Seurat's 'Bathers at Asnières' ('Une baignade, Asnières', 1884) is a two-by-three-metre composition of working-class Parisians bathing and idling on the Seine at the north-western industrial suburb of Asnières. Its systematic stippling and short strokes inaugurated Neo-Impressionism and, together with 'A Sunday on La Grande Jatte', form the core pair of Seurat's career. The picture has been at the National Gallery, London, since 1924.
