Peter Paul Rubens
The Triumph of Eucharist
c. 1625
One of the surviving oil modelli for Peter Paul Rubens's 'Triumph of the Eucharist' tapestry cycle, commissioned by the Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain in 1625–1626. The great Counter-Reformation programme allegorises the triumph of the Eucharistic sacrament through a sequence of monumental scenes — a summit of Flemish Baroque painting. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida holds four of the large original paintings and related studies, uniquely concentrated outside Europe.
