Matrix
2010
Rei Naito's permanent installation 'Matrix' (2010) occupies the single vast space of the Teshima Art Museum on Teshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea. Inside a droplet-shaped thin concrete shell by architect Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), tiny beads of water emerge from calibrated points in the floor and roll, merge, pool, and evaporate across the day. With no furniture, walls, or objects, the gallery reduces art to light, wind, and water — a contemplative distillation of contemporary installation that changes with every hour and season.
