Wilhelm Lehmbruck
Kneeling Woman
1911
Wilhelm Lehmbruck's 'Kneeling Woman' ('Die Kniende', 1911) is a watershed of early German Expressionist sculpture. An elongated, almost Gothic female nude kneels on one knee with hands folded and head bowed, transposing the ideal proportions of classical sculpture into inward silence and melancholy. The Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, devoted to the artist, holds the world's largest collection of his work.
