Jan Tricius
Portrait of John III Sobieski
1677
Jan Tricius's equestrian portrait of King Jan III Sobieski (reigned 1674–1696) was painted around 1676, celebrating the Polish monarch whose victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683 halted the Ottoman advance on central Europe and earned him the epithet 'saviour of Christendom'. Resplendent in ceremonial armour amid Oriental battle trophies, the king is immortalised in the Polish Baroque's grandest idiom. The painting hangs in his former summer residence, Wilanów Palace outside Warsaw.
