Kwon Young-woo
1982
'Jiphap (Aggregation) 82-KA' (1982) by Kwon Young-Woo (1926–2013), a first-generation Korean Dansaekhwa artist, is built without paint: layers of heavy mulberry hanji paper are piled up, then torn, gouged, and perforated with fingernails and hands until the sheet itself becomes the painting. One of the defining works in MMCA Seoul's permanent Dansaekhwa display, it epitomises the movement's turn toward material as subject.
