Detroit Industry Murals
1933
Painted by Diego Rivera in 1932–1933, the 'Detroit Industry Murals' cover 27 panels of the garden court at the Detroit Institute of Arts with a fresco epic of North American labour, science, and indigenous culture centred on Ford's River Rouge automobile plant. Produced during the depths of the Great Depression, the cycle was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2014 and is the defining work of the museum — Rivera himself called it the finest of his career.
