Ángel Della Valle
La vuelta del malón
1892
'El regreso del maroon' ('The Return of the Maroon') by Ángel de la Valle is a rare example of 19th-century Latin American painting devoted to the Afro-American resistance narrative — a 'cimarrón' (escaped slave) crossing the tropical jungle to return to his family, painted in the European academic idiom. It is a pioneering work of Latin American history painting on regional identity, with versions and related material shared across Colombian, Venezuelan, and Cuban national collections.
