Cottage Children (The Wood Gatherers)

Thomas Gainsborough's 'Peasant Children Gathering Wood' (1787), painted in the last year of his life, shows two ragged siblings collecting kindling in an English wood. Gainsborough integrates the figures almost entirely into the pastoral landscape, balancing a romantic taste for the picturesque with a quiet acknowledgement of rural poverty.
