Francisco de Zurbarán
The Young Virgin
ca. 1632–33
Francisco de Zurbarán's 'The Young Virgin' ('La Virgen Niña', c. 1632–1633) depicts a small girl — the child Mary — pausing from her sewing to pray before a vase of flowers, probably painted for a Sevillian religious house. The still, cool interior light and the disciplined tenderness of the child's face typify Zurbarán's meditative precision. The oil on canvas is a defining work of the Met's Spanish Golden Age collection.
