Blind Orion Searching for the Rising Sun

1658

Nicolas Poussin's 'Landscape with the Blind Orion Searching for the Rising Sun' (1658) restages the Greek myth in an idealised classical landscape: the giant Orion, blinded by Oenopion, strides toward the dawn to regain his sight, with his guide Cedalion on his shoulder, while the goddess Diana looks down through the clouds. A summit of 17th-century French classical landscape, it has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1924.
