Seydou Keïta
Untitled (Woman with Radio)
c. 1950
'Untitled (Woman with a Radio)', photographed by the Malian portraitist Seydou Keïta (c. 1921–2001) in his Bamako studio in the 1950s or early 1960s, shows a young woman posing with a modern transistor radio against one of Keïta's signature bogolanfini printed backdrops. The combination of traditional wrapper dress and brand-new technology captured West African self-fashioning at the threshold of independence, making Keïta a canonical modernist portrait photographer. The Art Institute of Chicago holds a core set of his gelatin silver prints.
