Composition

1951

'Composition' (c. 1960s) by the South African–born artist Ernest Mancoba (1904–2002), the only African member of the postwar CoBrA avant-garde in Paris. Working at the intersection of African traditional art and European figurative abstraction, Mancoba's oils dissolve human figures into luminous, almost calligraphic fields. The work in the Art Institute of Chicago is among the reference pieces for his reception in North American collections.
