From Sabelo Mlangeni's 'Royalty' series (2010s), 'Uche, Dressed to the Nines' is an inkjet print portrait of a friend in Johannesburg's Black queer community, dressed in an elaborate formal outfit. Mlangeni has been documenting South African LGBTQ+ lives for more than a decade. The Art Institute of Chicago holds his photographs as part of its contemporary African photography collection.
