Garveyites in Parade

1924

James Van Der Zee's 'Garveyites on Parade' (1924, gelatin silver print) documents a Universal Negro Improvement Association street parade in Harlem: uniformed UNIA members marching under Marcus Garvey's black-red-and-green banners through the streets of New York. It is one of the central images of early 20th-century African-American organising, held by the Art Institute of Chicago alongside related Van Der Zee prints.
