James VanDerZee
Untitled (Garveyite Women's Brigade)
1924
A gelatin silver print by James Van Der Zee (1886–1983) depicting a group of uniformed women from the Universal Negro Improvement Association's auxiliary — the Black Cross Nurses — posed in his Harlem studio in the 1920s. A rare early visual record of Black women's mass organising in the United States, it belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago's Van Der Zee holdings.
