Kwame Brathwaite
Untitled (Grandassa Advertisement)
c. 1968
A Kwame Brathwaite gelatin silver print from his 1960s campaign for Grandassa Models, the Harlem modelling agency founded by the African Jazz-Art Society and Studios (AJASS). Models who had been excluded from mainstream media posed in natural afros and African-inspired dress, and the resulting images became seed imagery for the 'Black is Beautiful' movement. The Art Institute of Chicago holds a core group of these photographs.
