Marilyn Nance
Tafawa Balewa Square Crowd
1977
Marilyn Nance (b. 1953) documented the 1977 Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC '77) in Lagos, Nigeria — the largest pan-African cultural gathering of the 20th century. 'Crowd at Tafawa Balewa Square' is one of her defining gelatin silver prints from that trip, registering the collective energy of global Black culture meeting on African soil. The Art Institute of Chicago holds a substantial body of Nance's FESTAC photographs.
