Raphael
Madonna of the Chair
1514
Raphael's 'Madonna della Seggiola' ('Madonna of the Chair'), painted in Rome around 1513–1514, is an 86-cm tondo depicting the Virgin seated and tenderly embracing the infant Christ and the young John the Baptist. Tradition holds that the model was a real Roman mother and child, and the warm, almost domestic intimacy — together with Raphael's flowing circular composition — makes this among the most beloved Madonnas of his mature Roman years. It hangs at the Palazzo Pitti (Galleria Palatina) in Florence.
