Claude Monet
Impression, Sunrise
1872
Claude Monet's small oil 'Impression, Sunrise' (1872), painted at dawn in the harbour of Le Havre, gave Impressionism its name. When shown at the group's first independent exhibition in 1874, a sneering critic seized on the title and dubbed the artists 'Impressionists' — a label they adopted. A few minutes of orange sun rising over grey mist, captured in rapid sketch-like brushwork, the canvas is the signature possession of the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris.
