Asher Brown Durand
Kindred Spirits
1849
Asher B. Durand's 'Kindred Spirits' (1849) — a memorial to the recently deceased Thomas Cole, shown in a Catskill gorge in conversation with his friend, the poet William Cullen Bryant — is one of the defining images of the Hudson River School's romantic vision of American nature. In 2005 Alice Walton acquired the painting for USD 35 million as a founding work of her Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
