Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 'Bal du moulin de la Galette' (1876) is one of Impressionism's defining large-scale canvases. On a sunlit Sunday at Montmartre's open-air dance hall, couples whirl to the music while friends of the artist lounge around a table in dappled shade. Renoir's shimmering brushwork and his innovation of applying dappled highlights across faces and clothing fuse light, movement, and sociability into a single immersive Parisian afternoon. It has hung at the Musée d'Orsay since 1986.
