The Biglin Brothers Turning the Stake

1873

Thomas Eakins's 'The Biglin Brothers Turning the Stake' (c. 1873) depicts a pair-oar rowing race on Philadelphia's Schuylkill River, with the champion Biglin brothers manoeuvring their shell around the turning post. Drawing on his anatomical studies, Eakins renders musculature, motion, and the summer light with documentary precision — a landmark of late 19th-century American realism and a centrepiece of the Cleveland Museum of Art's American galleries.
