Charles Sheeler (American, 1883–1965)
Church Street El
1920
Charles Sheeler's 'Church Street El' (1920) looks down at a Lower Manhattan street from an elevated rail viewpoint, the interlocking geometry of the buildings and the 'El' tracks rendered in the painter-photographer's crystalline Precisionist idiom. An icon of early American modernism in which the city is treated with the cool clarity of machine design, the oil on canvas is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
