The Large Plane Trees (Road Menders at Saint-Rémy)

1889

Painted by Vincent van Gogh in Saint-Rémy in December 1889, 'The Road Menders at Saint-Rémy' ('Les Grands Platanes') shows workmen repaving a boulevard beneath a procession of enormous, bare plane trees whose branches writhe in his distinctive swirling brushwork. A pivotal work in which Van Gogh returned to observed scenes of daily life during his hospital stay, the oil is one of the principal late Van Goghs at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
