The Red Kerchief

Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926)

The Red Kerchief

c. 1868–1873

Claude Monet's 'The Red Kerchief (Madame Monet)' (c. 1870s) is an unusual indoor–outdoor view: Camille Monet glimpsed through a window as she walks past the house in a snowstorm, her scarlet shawl the single warm accent against a cold silvery landscape. The picture is one of the defining early Monets of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
