Pieter de Hooch (Dutch, 1629–1684)
Portrait of a Family Playing Music
1663
Pieter de Hooch's 'Portrait of a Family Making Music' (1660s) depicts a prosperous Dutch family gathered in a well-ordered living room, parents and children performing a domestic concert with lute, recorder, and song. De Hooch's signature interior light and rigorous perspective turn the scene into a model of the 17th-century Dutch bourgeois ideal of private music-making. It is one of the defining Dutch-Golden-Age works in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
