A Woman's Work
1912
John Sloan's 'Woman's Work' (1912) depicts a working-class woman hanging laundry on a New York tenement rooftop, seen from behind in a characteristic Ashcan School image that celebrates the dignity of daily labour. The oil on canvas is a key work of the Cleveland Museum of Art's American early-20th-century collection.
