Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917)
Frieze of Dancers
c. 1895
Edgar Degas's 'Frieze of Dancers' (c. 1895) arranges four ballerinas in horizontal sequence across the canvas — each at a different moment of stretching, tying her shoe, or waiting — a virtuoso late meditation on the working body of the dance. Combining Impressionist light, the cropping of Japanese prints, and Degas's unmatched observation of movement, the oil is one of the major late works in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
