Monteith with the Gibbs and Nelthorpe coats of arms
1700
A late 17th-century English engraved-glass 'monteith' — a wide-bowled vessel filled with ice-water to cool the feet of wine glasses hooked over its scalloped rim. Diamond-point engraved around the rim are the arms of the Gibbs and Nelthorpe families, identifying a marriage alliance. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it as a key reference piece in its European glass collection.
