Round gown
ca. 1795
A 17th-century Italian silk-and-linen robe (the 'round gown' ancestor of the later mantua) woven with intricate Jacquard-style patterning. The soft shoulders, sharply corseted bodice, and wide flowing skirt together illustrate the anatomy of elite Baroque women's dress. It is one of the reference Italian garments of the period in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
