Dining room from Lansdowne House

1766–69

The Dining Room of Lansdowne House, designed by the English Neoclassical architect Robert Adam in 1766–1769 for the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne near Berkeley Square in London, is one of the finest surviving Adam interiors: white walls inset with Neoclassical stucco ornament in green, blue, and gilt, crowned by a coffered vault and appointed with matching furniture. When the London house was demolished in 1931, the entire room was transferred to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and reassembled intact in its American Wing.
