Coat

ca. 1833

A British silk coat from the late 19th century, designed to be worn over a woman's outdoor dress. The finely Jacquard-woven silk and crisp tailored cut reflect the extension of Savile Row's bespoke traditions into elite women's outerwear in the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it as a reference example of British upper-class tailoring in its Costume Institute collection.
