Dress
1860–65
An American evening dress of the late 19th or early 20th century — silk with mother-of-pearl buttons and beadwork — whose sharply corseted silhouette and shimmering embellishment epitomise the fashion of Gilded Age elite society in Newport and New York. It is one of the reference pieces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute holdings of American formal wear.
