Ancient Roman
Bowl or Cup
Mid–1st century
A cast-glass bowl or cup produced in the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD. Formed by pressing molten glass into a mould — the older cast technique that preceded the rapid expansion of free-blown glass — such vessels marked the moment glass first became fashionable tableware for the Roman elite. Held in the Art Institute of Chicago's ancient glass collection as a reference piece for material comparison.
