Niwa Tokei
A Pine Tree and Camellias
1840
A surimono (privately commissioned, deluxe polychrome woodblock print) of pine and camellia by the late Edo painter Niwa Tōkei (1760–1822), produced in the early 19th century. Unlike commercial ukiyo-e, surimono were printed in small editions for poetry circles and special occasions, often with gold and silver pigments and refined blind-embossing. The example at the Art Institute of Chicago is a reference work for its ukiyo-e collection.
