Giovanni Battista Piranesi
View of the Villa d'Este, Tivoli, from Views of Rome
1773, published 1800–07
One of Giovanni Battista Piranesi's 'Views of Rome' ('Vedute di Roma'), this 18th-century etching depicts the great Renaissance gardens of the Villa d'Este at Tivoli, with Piranesi's signature dramatic perspective magnifying the cypresses, terraces, and fountains. The Art Institute of Chicago holds a strong set of the 'Vedute di Roma', which together shaped the European Grand Tour's visual canon.
