Giovanni Battista Piranesi
View of the Small Waterfall and Rapids, Tivoli, from Views of Rome
1769
One of Giovanni Battista Piranesi's 'Views of Rome' ('Vedute di Roma'), this etching on heavy ivory laid paper shows the smaller falls of the Aniene at Tivoli, seen through Piranesi's characteristic dramatic perspective that magnifies Roman masonry and natural cliffs alike. Produced in the 18th century and widely disseminated on the Grand Tour, the series shaped the European imagination of ancient Rome for more than a century. Held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
