Henri Rousseau
Sawmill, Outskirts of Paris
c. 1893/95
Henri Rousseau's 'Sawmill, Outskirts of Paris' (1890s), painted by the self-taught Parisian customs officer, depicts an industrial landscape in the northern suburbs of Paris with Rousseau's signature frontal, flattened composition and disciplined blocks of colour. Chimneys, worksheds, and trees compose a quiet, almost diagrammatic geometry — a complement to his better-known jungle scenes — now in the Art Institute of Chicago's late 19th-century French holdings.
