Elgin Marbles
c. 447–432 BC
The Elgin Marbles — large portions of the Parthenon frieze, metopes, and pediment statues carved between 447 and 432 BC under Pheidias — have been at the British Museum since 1817, after Lord Elgin removed them from the Acropolis under Ottoman authorisation. They remain the focal point of Greece's long-standing campaign for their return and of wider debates about the restitution of cultural heritage.
