David Hockney English, born 1937
American Collectors (Fred and Marcia Weisman)
1968
David Hockney's 'American Collectors (Fred and Marcia Weisman)' (1968) portrays the Los Angeles collectors before their art-filled garden, Fred in a grey suit and Marcia in a long orange dress stiffly posed like museum mannequins beside a totem pole and a William Turnbull sculpture. Hockney's cool Californian clarity makes the picture both portrait and social observation. Acrylic on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
