Joan Mitchell's 'City Landscape' (1955) is an early Abstract Expressionist canvas by the American painter who lived between New York and Paris. A dense central knot of red, black, and yellow skeins against a cool field recalls both the energy of mid-century New York and the chromatic clarity Mitchell would develop in France. The oil on linen is held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
