Jay DeFeo (Mary Joan DeFeo) American, 1929–1989
The Annunciation (Chicago version)
1957/59
Jay DeFeo's 'The Annunciation' (1957–1959), painted by the American artist in her legendary San Francisco studio, is a massive, tectonic meditation on the biblical moment. Heavy layers of built-up paint produce a sculpted, almost relief surface, echoing DeFeo's parallel work on 'The Rose'. The canvas is among the Art Institute of Chicago's defining postwar American paintings.
